Tips on Managing Your Mental Health-Lassou

10-16 May 2021 is an annual Mental Health Awareness Week. This event is a great opportunity for people to concentrate on their mental health and find some ways how they can maintain it. In today's article, we want to share with you some tips on managing your mental health.

What is Mental Health?

Just like physical health, we all have mental health. It's our feelings, our thinking, our emotions, and our moods. Feeling down, anger, and stress is a normal part of life. Just like it is normal to feel happy, confident, and carefree sometimes.

How to Achieve Good Mental Health?

Achieving positive mental health is not a linear process. There will be ups and downs and it is OK. To manage our mental health, we need to focus on small things that can affect our emotions and moods.

These small steps will help you to deal with anxiety and daily stresses.

SLEEP WELL

Tim Etherington-Judge, the founder of Healthy Hospo, says that managing mental health is a step-by-step process that requires efforts and focus on things that are beneficial for us. "Managing your mental health is like building a bag of tools that you use to be mentally fit. And the most important tool is sleep. Without good sleep it is impossible to have good mental health", — says Tim.

Sleeping helps our mind and body recover from daily stresses. To sleep better, avoid using your phone or laptop 1 hour before going to bed. Instead, try to do something relaxing, like reading a book, listening to calming music, or some easy stretching. Build the evening routine that calms your mind and relaxes you.

Experience Nature

This year Mental Health Awareness Week's theme is nature. It is a great opportunity to take a moment and celebrate nature in your daily life. Stop to listen to the birds, smell the flowers, buy some house plants to take care of, notice bees, squirrels, and birds nearby.  After a year of lockdown, we all need a deep breath of fresh air. Even small contacts with nature can reduce feelings of social isolation and be effective in protecting our mental health, and preventing stress.

PRACTICE SELF-LOVE

Self-love is important for leading a happy healthy life. Unfortunately, the concept of self-love is often overlooked and misunderstood. Self-love is not selfish. Prioritizing our own needs is not selfish. Despite everything that society has told you, taking care of your needs is one of the most important things you can do. Your health and happiness are yours to protect and maintain.

Self-love is doing what is best for you even if it does not necessarily excite you at the moment. This can be going to bed early when you know tomorrow is an important day, choosing to stay in so that you can finish the work in time, or saying no to a loved one because you want to have time for a proper rest.

Stop Criticizing Yourself

Sometimes we are too hard on ourselves. We think that we are not smart enough, that we should work more, and do better. But pushing yourself so hard doesn't help and it can damage our mental health. When we constantly spur ourselves on with self-criticism, we can temporarily increase our productivity. But we also stress ourselves heavily. This stress grows and reduces our ability to work and achieve our goals in the long run.

There is a way to deal with it. Instead of criticizing, try to inspire yourself. How does it work:

Talk About Your Feelings

Sometimes it can be hard to talk about what you feel. We are used to thinking that it is a sign of weakness. But it is not how it is. Talking about your feelings is beneficial for your mental health and it can help you go through challenges.  It’s part of taking charge of your well-being and doing what you can to stay healthy.

Be Active

Daily activities are essential for our mind and health. They help us to unwind, step back from tasks, and just relax while taking care of your body. Regular exercise helps you concentrate, sleep, and feel better. Start tracking your daily activity and choose the sport you enjoy. And no, beer pong is not the option.

Give Yourself Time

Taking a break is important for good mental health. Taking care of your needs is an act of love. Give yourself a few minutes out of your day to provide yourself with what you need can help you feel a lot better, whether it's soaking in a hot bath, eating something healthy or a short workout. Practicing self-care can go a long way for your mental health and happiness.

Find Your Sources of Inspiration

What motivates and inspires you? Maybe it is your favorite YouTube show, or a book, or talking to your best friend? Pause and think for a moment about three things that make you feel good. Make sure you do at least one of them every day.
